Children Programmes:
A Trip to the Money Moon™
is a 10 hour first level course on money matters for 9 to 11 year old children. This course can fit in a school term. The course includes a handout for children with most of exercises done during the class and tips to share with their parents on how to practise money knowledge.
Session 1: Where does this money come from? In this first session, the children need to pack before going to the Money Moon! Through games and hand-on activities, the children learn what currencies are, what an exchange rate is and how to change money. They also discover how money fluctuates and why there are two rates at the bureau de change.
Session 2: the Plastic Power. In this second session, the children open a bank account and receive a cheque book and a credit card. They learn about how the different payment types work, especially credit cards, and how to read a bank statement.
Session 3: Time to pack! In this third session, the children go shopping to get ready for their trip. They learn about the different types of expenses and the difference between wishes and needs. They discover what parents spend their money on and the reasons for shopping.
Session 4: The smart spenders. In this fourth session, the children practice spending smartly with various examples including mobile phones and how to choose a deal with different options and prices. They learn about the power of advertising. They also get a bill and learn how to read it and get tips on how to control expenses.
Session 5: Let’s drive the Money rocket! In this fifth session, the children learn how the Money Rocket controls and gears work! They learn about the value of money and how prices change. They build their rocket, set up its price and sell it. We then calculate how much profit they have made and what a business is.
Session 6: Welcome to the Money Moon! In this sixth session, the children land on the Money Moon! They learn more financial words. But the Money Rocket tank is empty and the children need to find money to buy more fuel to get back to Earth. They learn how to get money and how to choose a job.
Session 7: Time to refill our money tank! In this seventh session, the children do their jobs and deposit their salary cheque to their bank account. They also visit a virtual bank and learn about the different services a bank can offer.
Session 8: Preparing tomorrow. In this eighth session, the children learn about saving money. They discover the reasons why it is important to save, how to set goals and save for them, what interest is all about and how loans work.
Session 9: Maps and chests! In this ninth session, the children learn how to write a simple budget for their trip back to the Earth. With a fixed sum at first, they learn how to plan expenses and revenues and how to anticipate bills. We explore ways to apply budgets in daily life.
Session 10: Back to Earth! In this tenth and last session, the children drive their rocket back to earth. They use their budget to monitor their expenses and check how much money they end up with. We also learn what a charity is. We review the main notions learned during the ten sessions. The children brainstorm on the best way to apply the course to daily life. The children receive a certificate and material to help them practice their new knowledge.
